Prof. Emmanuel Chukwuemeka -Ojiyi, has been elected the first Provost of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra.
Until his election, Ojiyi, a professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics was the dean faculty of Clinical Medicine, COOU, Anambra.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ojiyi is the first elected provost to hold the position after the recent combination of medicine and health sciences.
Dr Chukwudi Okani, Chairman, Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) COOU confirmed the election to journalists on Wednesday in Awka.
He said that Ojiyi polled hundred per cent vote, adding ” all the 36 members who took part in the election voted for him”.
He said the first Executive Provost who steer the ship of the College now with three Faculties will serve for four years.
“The exercise took place at the Pathology Auditorium, COOU Teaching Hospital, Amaku-Awka, on Monday and we are happy that a ‘quintessential deity and academic colossus emerged winner,” he said.
Okani said that the emergency of Ojiyi was not a surprise as he had demonstrated enough capacities in the previous positions held in the school over the years.
According to him, many contestants stepped down once Ojiyi indicated interest in the position of the provost of the college.
“His emergence is a good thing to the university because he is one of the erudite professors with rich academic profile in COOU.
Ojiyi, who succeeded Prof. Walter Nwafia, whose tenure expired in Aug. 2, graduated from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 1988.
