October 23, 2023, marked a momentous occasion as the world celebrated the 60th posthumous birthday of the legendary Nigerian footballer, Rashidi Yekini, affectionately known as the “Goalsfather” for his extraordinary ability to outsmart goalkeepers and find the back of the net.
In a fitting tribute to this football icon, Google and numerous prominent figures from around the globe joined in the festivities. Yekini’s life serves as an inspiring example, especially for Nigerian youths, demonstrating that talent and determination can pave the way to success in any career. He was born on this day in 1963 in Kaduna, Nigeria, and his journey was one of exceptional determination and triumph.
Yekini’s early years were fraught with adversity, as he grappled with homelessness and poverty. He took on various jobs, including welding and mechanic work, but his heart yearned for a career in football. His fortunes took a turn for the better when scouts discovered his talent, leading to his debut with UNTL FC in Kaduna in 1981.
The talented striker’s career reached new heights when he joined the Shooting Stars, where he made headlines by scoring an incredible 45 goals in just 53 games. His remarkable goal-scoring prowess earned him the prestigious title of African Footballer of the Year in 1993, making him the first Nigerian player to receive this honor. The following year, Yekini played a pivotal role in taking the Shooting Stars to the finals of the African Champions Cup.
