The Rector of Yaba College of Technology (YABAECH), Dr. Engr Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, has advised members of the students’ union executives to uphold the value of excellence, integrity, and dialogue and operate within the ambit of the rules and regulations guiding the union and the institution.
Abdul gave this advise at the swearing-in ceremony of the 44TH President. YABATECH Students Union Government and Students’ Representative Council held recently at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the institution.
The Rector in his remarks charged the newly elected Student’s Union Executives to uphold the values of excellence as they represent YABATECH, adding that excellence, integrity, and mutual dialogue must be their watchword.
Abdul noted that leadership comes with a lot of sacrifice, humility, teachableness, and commitment to a higher cause. You should continue to consult, collaborate, and build fences at all times in the interest of the growth and development of the institution.
“YABATECH is not first by age but in everything, even in student management and interaction. We will show the way. It is our ardent desire that you build on our strong and dynamic student union body”, he said.
He charged the newly elected Students’ Union Executives in the institution to eschew political vendetta, internal wrangling, and destructive youthful exuberance, which can tarnish the image of the institution.
Abdul implored the union’s leaders to be careful of the unfolded allegations, saying “You will hear a lot of things. A leader will take it upon him or her to listen and be careful in reacting. Always have your facts before you act or talk and be guided by the truth always”
He posited further that the Students’ Union is not a vehicle for intimidating members of the public and fellow students.
Abdul further charged them to ensure that their academic programme does not suffer at the expense of engaging in Union activities.”
He assured the student union executives that the management is open to helpful contributions to the growth and development of the institution as partners in progress.
The Director of Student Affairs of YABATECH, Alhaji Olalekan Alaba assured the SUG executives of an open-door policy stand of the institution.
“We understand your language. I was a member of SUG years ago. I will say that unionism is about dialogue. We will continue to dialogue and resolve every matter amicably. Have confidence in us, we will always be there for you”, he said.
The newly elected President of the SUG, Morakinyo Olaolu Sola commended his fellow students for electing him to lead them, saying he will not disappoint them while assuring the management of the school that he will run a consultative administration.
He promised to mobilize the students to support the management efforts towards uplifting the institution.
He said “Our Institution is a diverse community, a tapestry of talents, ideas, and aspirations. As your representative, my commitment is to foster unity, peace, progress, amplify your voices, and champion the collective interests of every student of Yaba College of Technology.
“I will work tirelessly to enhance the student experience, advocate for your needs, and ensure that our time here is not just about academic excellence but also about personal growth, fulfillment, and Development”.
Olaolu added “Together, let us embark on a journey of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. Our strength lies in our diversity, and by embracing it, we can create an environment where every student feels heard, valued, and empowered”.
“Let us build bridges, break barriers, and make our college experience unforgettable. With your support and engagement, I am confident that we can achieve great things together.”
He posited further by introducing the first-of-its-kind Website of the Yaba College of Technology Student Union Government “YASUG”, adding that this is one among many plans we have as a union, that will further enhance what we do, and also create more visibility for the union and the college at large.
