Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday made a case for millions of Nigerians who are yet to obtain their voters’ card by urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the deadline for the Continuous Voter’s Registration (CVR).
This is just as INEC also on Wednesday, announced an extension of the deadline earlier fixed for June 30, 2022, by another 30 days.
The move, the Reps insist, is to enable more eligible Nigerians to register and get their Permanent Voter Card; which would ensure their participation in the 2023 general elections.
The resolution was passed during plenary on Wednesday, June 15, 2022; following the adoption of a motion passed by Benjamin Kalu, a lawmaker from Abia state. Consequently, the House rose from its deliberations to request the extension by INEC. Equally important, the House revealed that it had observed with worry the large numbers of unregistered eligible voters willing to be registered as evidenced by crowd seen at various registration centres resulting in congestion.
INEC had fixed June 30 as the deadline for the suspension of CVR across the country ahead of the 2023 general election.
