Former President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe is dead. He was aged 95.
Reports said Mugabe who has been hospitalized since April, died in a Singaporean hospital in the early hours of Friday.
Robert Mugabe was Zimbabwean’s first post independent leader.
His family confirmed his death to the BBC.
He was ousted in a military coup in 2017, after 37 years in power. He left power at the age of 93, one of the few Africans to have stayed longest as leaders.
Mugabe would be remembered as Zimbabwean hero, who broadened access to health and education for the black majority.
His long stay in office however soiled that reputation as his latter years were marred by rights abuses, and very high level of corruption.
Robert Mugabe won Zimbabwean’s first election after it gained independence from Britain in 1980, becoming the country’s first Prime Minister.
He later embraced presidential democracy becoming Zimbabwe’s first democratically elected President.
