In a world where access to education remains unequal, books have been described as a unique and invaluable tool that can help to shape the minds and stimulate intellectual growth, especially of the young ones, no matter their state or status.
The Director, Special and Inclusive Education, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Abimbola Abolarin, stated this at the donation of pictorial school textbooks by Sterling Global Oil Resources Ltd. (SGORL), to students of Wesley Schools for the Hearing Impaired, Yaba, Lagos on January 19, 2024.
Mrs Abolarin, expressed her happiness at the donation which she noted aims to bridge the knowledge gap by providing resources to those who might not have easy access to educational materials.
She said by donating the pictorial textbooks under the theme creating possibilities, SGORL is cultivating the culture of reading among students at the Wesley Schools for the Hearing Impaired, Yaba.
Dr. Abolarin said: “SGORL’s book donation drive for the hearing-impaired children will profoundly impact them by breaking communication barriers. The initiative will instill a love for reading, broadening horizons, and paving the way for a brighter and more equitable future for them, despite their disadvantage.”
She said SGORL with the book donation, recognises that promoting literacy and learning is a shared responsibility and an investment for a brighter, more inclusive future, adding that through the initiative, SGORL aims to empower young minds, stimulate creativity, and ignite their curiosity.
During the event, books were distributed among the children to kindle a passion for reading, to enhance vocabulary, explore new worlds, unravel mysteries, and visualise bigger dreams. The books delivered represent a treasure trove of wisdom.
Responding, the Director/Principal, School 1, Wesley School of Impaired Hearing, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Oluwayemisi Popoola, said SGORL has proved to be a responsible corporate entity who takes pride in democratising access to education among the impaired and people living with disabilities.
“By adopting a culture of giving to the less privileged, especially people of special needs, SGORL sets the standard for a more comprehensive humanity where everyone can learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully,” she said.
