Nigeria military may have further ceded the nation land to Boko Haram as soldiers abandoned their military post in Kangarwa, a village on Nigerian border with Chad.
Military sources said, the soldiers in Kangarwa decided to abandon their post to avoid being overrun by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) who killed over 50 Nigerian soldiers in attack on Metele, a week ago.
The source who preferred anonymity told our correspondent on Monday that: “As I speak to you now there are no soldiers in Kangarwa, Kukawa local government area. They have abandoned their post since on 23rd of this month due to obsolete equipments that are deployed there.”
The source said: “Inside those three battle tanks that was carted away by the insurgents from 119 Task Force Battalion Defence Company were new ammunitions that have just been issued by the Theatre Command to that unit in Kangarwa.”
He said that “this include 7200 round of AK 47 ammo, 5000 round of light machine gun ammo and also 40 pieces of mortar bombs.”
He stressed that the soldiers just decided to abandoned the area because it was just about 12 kilometres away from Metele and were afraid that what happened to their colleagues in Metele may happened to them.
He added that they were afraid that they may not be able to take on the insurgents with their obsolete weapons.
He further revealed that the Commanding Officer, Major Yusuf Abdullahi was currently ill and was recuperating at the Brigade Hospital.
