South Korean health authorities on Wednesday announced more than 5,000 new Coronavirus infections in one day for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.
Most of the 5,123 new infections were reported in Seoul and the capital region.
The total number rose to over 452,000. So far, more than 80 per cent of the population of about 52 million people have been fully vaccinated.
A daily record was also reported for intensive care patients with COVID-19.
For the first time, the threshold of 700 was exceeded on Tuesday.
Intensive care beds for Coronavirus patients were almost 80 per cent full nationwide.
In addition, the Office of Disease Control and Prevention reported four suspected cases of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus. Genome sequencing was to be used to determine which variant the patients had been infected with.
