• says more roads will be covered soon
The Lagos State Government has said speed limit devices are installed only on two roads- Alapere Road, (by Ogudu axis on the Third Mainland Bridge), and at NITEL Bus Stop, on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja.
“The clarifications, became necessary following a number of viral reports, which had listed a number of roads on which government had mounted closed circuit television (CCTV) camera, to police the roads, especially against over-speeding”, the statement said.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement which addressed mounting public concerns on the enforcement of speed limits on selected roads, said though there were studies that justify the installation of the device across more roads, the government would not embark on such until more studies are carried out to justify their installations.
He urged the public to stop fabricating false information on the speed limits operation, as the government will continue to inform the public concerning any enforcement about to be embarked upon by the state.
In the statement signed by the Deputy Director Public Affairs of the Ministry Bolanle Oguntola, the Commissioner also reaffirmed the legality of the regulations and urged motorists to comply with the safety of all road users.
Osiyemi, referenced Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018), as the legal basis for imposing fines and penalties on motorists who exceeded prescribed speed limits.
Also clarifying the legal framework for traffic signs, Osiyemi emphasized that the Ministry of Transportation is solely responsible for determining the size, colour, and type of traffic signs in Lagos State, ensuring standardization and adherence to global best practices.
The Commissioner reiterated that the speed limit cameras which was installed after a comprehensive studies on the need in those axis are currently only on Alapere Road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony.
He noted that studies have shown the need for other areas of the state and that this will be done after further reviews.
He, however, reaffirmed that the primary purpose of installing the cameras is for the safety of commuters as well as motorists on the road.
For inquiries or clarifications, motorists and the general public are advised to visit the official Lagos State Ministry of Transportation website, verified social media handles, or contact the appropriate traffic management authorities.
