The Supreme Court will today give its verdict on the governorship tussle between Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the former Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Indepent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the PDP candidate Senator Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the election conducted on July 15, 2022.
The APC candidate had sought a redress at the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo, which upheld the allegation of over-voting in the areas won by Mr Adeleke, and declared in its ruling in January 2023, that Mr Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the valid winner of the poll after deducting “unlawful votes” from the PDP’s scores.
But Mr Adeleke appealed against the lower court’s decision, urging the appellate court to set it aside and re-affirm his victory.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday, March 24, 2023, upturned the verdict of the Election Tribunal, and affirmed the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Osun State.
A three-member panel of the appellate court led by Mohammed Shuaibu unanimously overturned the earlier decision of the election petition tribunal which nullified the governor’s victory.
Oyetola had proceeded to the Supreme Court for its final verdict on the election and the court will be ruling on the matter today.
