Update: Tension returns to Modakeke-Ife over death of five persons

Peace, it was gathered seemed to have returned to Modakeke as police, it was gathered have swung into investigating the circumstances leading to the death of at least five persons in the Osun State community on Friday.

The town was thrown into mourning following the discovery of the remains of five young men, suspected to have been killed on their way to the farm.

The incident SUNRISE NEWS gathered happened at Alapata Village, in the early hours of Friday.

The bodies were said to have been found around Toro Road, at dawn on Friday.

A source said the men met their death when they were attacked on the way to their farm.

The source who preferred anonymity however claimed the people might have been victims of ritual killers as the eyes of at least two of them were said to have been gorged out.

But another source claimed the killings might have been a reprisal killings of an earlier attack three months ago around the same area, of the killing of some people suspected to be Ifes in their farm.

The source further claimed that the remains of the dead persons were being taken for burial and the irate youths had attacked the Modakeke community in reprisal attack.

Attempt to take the dead to mortuary again led to another gun attack, which led to the killing of another person, making a total of six people killed in the incident.

The development it was further gathered has led to a heightened tension in the two communities.

In Modakeke, political leaders and councillors are already holding a meeting with the Ogunsua of Modakeke and his chiefs on dousing the tension. Similar meeting is said to be going on at the Ile Oodua Palace of the Ooni of Ife.

Ooni Enitan Ogunwusi, upon assension unto the throne, has introduced a number of initiatives to put an end to the decade-long internecine war between Ife and Modakeke.

The Osun State Police spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident, adding that a team of police operatives has been drafted to the towns.

It was also learnt that the Obafemi Awolowo University had shut its main gate to protect the school from infiltration.
