Council chief inaugurates committee to midwife Community Policing

Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government has taken a bold step at enhancing and improving grassroots policing with the inauguration of the Community Policing Advisory Committee.

Chairman, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, Apostle Oloruntoba Oke, while inaugurating the 10-man committee at the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) hall, Area G Police Command, Ogba on Friday, said it is first of its kind in the history of community police relationship in the area.

He described the development as one which sets out to put security in the hands of the grassroots as proposed by the Inspector General of police, (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu which is being implemented by the Area G Ogba, Commander, Mr I. D Zungura, which has nine Area commands under his jurisdiction.

Continuing he said; “the new initiative is long overdue, as the reform is being implemented with the objective to address inadequacies and shortcomings of the present policing model which he said had failed to engage members of the local communities and neighborhoods in intelligence gathering and knowledge sharing that could help mitigate against crime completely”.

The council helmsman who represented about 5 other Local Government Chairmen charged members of the Committee to discharge their duties with utmost integrity, Patriotism and diligence, saying their membership was a” rare privilege” and an opportunity to serve their respective local governments and Lagos in general.

Mr Tunji Olagunju administered the opening prayer while the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Alakuko, SP. Sonubi Maryam gave the vote of thanks .

The composition of the Committee include: the Market leader, Iyaloja general of Ogba, Representative of the DSS, NIS,NDLEA, CAN, Muslim Community, Educational Initiative and a retired police officer.
