Vetland Senior Grammar School, Ifako Ijaiye, has emerged champion of the keenly contested Lagos State Governor’s Quiz competition.
They defeated Amuwo Odofin Senior Secondary School, Mile 2 and Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbonla to the second and third positions respectively.
Speaking at the virtual grand finale of the competition for primary, junior and senior secondary schools, on Wednesday, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo stated that the annual quiz competition was designed to build confidence and boost the knowledge of students, thereby preparing them for the future and global opportunities.
Adefisayo noted that the initiative will broaden the students’ horizons, enable them to adopt various skills like research, teamwork and collaboration, stating that the government has continued to engage the students with various competitions in a bid to aid their improvement in academics.
According to her, the Governor’s Quiz competition was not only initiated to encourage the students, but to also ensure that they are on top of their studies as well as enhance their academic performances, stating that the competition will give them a wider scope on their core subjects and general studies.
In her words: “I congratulate all the exceptional students that have transited to this stage, assuring you all that everyone is a winner and we are indeed proud of you”.
The Commissioner advised the children in the State to devote more time to their academics in order to attain excellence and have a bright future, urging them to see the competition as an avenue to upscale their knowledge.
Earlier in her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Abosede Adelaja, said the quiz competition is expected to focus on the three domains of education, namely: psychomotor, cognitive and affective domain.
She explained that the Lagos State Schools Governor’s Quiz Competition is an annual event designed to develop the minds of the pupils by creating healthy rivalry among school children and it has produced many brilliant students over the years.
In the senior category, Lalekan Ebere and Olabisi Divine represented Vetland Senior Grammar School, Ifako Ijaiye; Okefatiah Ogunniyi and Abolore Oluwayemisi were the representatives of Amuwo Odofin Senior Secondary School, Mile 2, while Adedokun Olonade and Abdulahi Glory were the flag bearers for Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbonla.
In the junior category, Ewuche Dosu and Praise Sewedo Kehinde of Topo Junior Secondary School came first, while Bamidele Babatunde and Daniella Anointed of Ijaiye Housing Estate Junior Secondary School as well as Adekunle Akindele and Marvelous Mohammed of Onilekere Junior High School came second and third respectively.
In the Primary Schools’ category, Imoleayo Sanni and Idowu King of Duro Oyedoyin Primary School, Surulere came first, while Aisaat Muhammed and Usman Famuyiwa of Baruwa Primary School, Mushin, and Grace Taiwo and Gabriel Kajola of Army Model Primary School, Ojo came second and third respectively.
The winners will be presented with trophies, plaques and gift items such as mobile tablets and school materials among others, at a later date.
