Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has unveiled ambitious plans for the city, aiming to drive significant improvements across various sectors in the capital.
He expressing optimism for the year ahead while reflecting on the achievements of 2024 in a New Year message on Wednesday, calling on the residents to join efforts in transforming Abuja into a world-class capital.
In a comprehensive New Year address, Wike outlined key initiatives that focus on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, agriculture, public transportation reforms, youth empowerment, and tourism.
Wike emphasized the importance of sustaining investments in road networks and other critical infrastructure projects. He believes that robust infrastructure is essential for stimulating economic growth and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents. “Our commitment to improving our road networks and essential infrastructure will continue to be a priority,” he stated.
The minister highlighted plans to improve access to healthcare, education, and agricultural services for all residents of the FCT, noting that these sectors are vital for fostering a healthy and educated populace capable of contributing to the region’s development.
“We must ensure that every resident has access to quality healthcare and education,” Wike remarked.
Addressing transportation challenges in the capital, Wike announced plans for public transportation reforms that will involve private sector participation. This initiative, he said aims to create a more efficient and reliable transportation system, making it easier for residents to navigate the city. “We are committed to transforming public transport in the FCT to meet the needs of our growing population,” he added.
Recognising the potential of young people in shaping the future of the FCT, Wike pledged to expand youth empowerment programs. These initiatives will focus on skills development, entrepreneurship, and job creation, providing young residents with opportunities to thrive. “Investing in our youth is investing in our future,” he asserted.
Wike also discussed plans to unlock the tourism potential of the FCT while building on recent security achievements. By promoting tourism, he aims to boost local economies and create jobs. “The FCT has so much to offer in terms of culture and heritage; we must capitalize on this potential,” he said.
In his address, Wike urged residents to fulfill their civic responsibilities by paying taxes and dues, which are crucial for funding development projects. “Sustainable development requires the active participation of all residents,” he noted, emphasizing that collective effort is essential for progress.
Wike also highlight several key accomplishments from 2024 that he believes have laid a strong foundation for future development in the FCT.
He listed Infrastructure Development:m, saying the construction of both urban and rural roads has significantly improved connectivity, fostering economic activities in previously underserved areas. This initiative has been pivotal in enhancing access to markets and services for residents.
On Educational Improvements, he said the rehabilitation efforts in local schools have created more conducive learning environments for children. Wike noted that these improvements are essential for fostering educational excellence and empowering the youth.
In security, Wike noted that in a move to bolster safety, over 100 vehicles were provided to security agencies, resulting in safer neighborhoods across the FCT. He underscored that security is a top priority for his administration.
On governance efficiency, the minister said the establishment of the Mandate Secretariat for Youth Development has improved administrative responsiveness, ensuring that the needs of young people are adequately addressed.
Speaking on economic growth, he said a concerted effort to attract both local and foreign investments has spurred visible economic growth, particularly in rural areas. Wike highlighted that this focus on investment is crucial for sustainable development.
He assures of his administration’s commitment to building on these successes. He emphasized plans to enhance infrastructure further, improve healthcare access, reform public transportation, expand youth empowerment initiatives, and develop tourism in the FCT.
