Yoruba Media Professionals Group berths in Lagos

A newly incorporated professional group for Yoruba media practitioners in Nigeria was on Thursday unveiled in Lagos for the promotion of Yoruba culture.

The trade association known as the Guild of Yoruba Media Practitioners, (GYMP), said its doors are open for members who must be people who are working on using the Yoruba language as a medium of communication.

GYMP’s Chairman, Mr. Samuel Akinrole, while officially unveiling the association, said GYMP membership is open to all active Yoruba language media practitioners all over the country, and those who accept the aims and objectives of the association.

“The association seeks to promote the practice of Yoruba journalism in line with the prevailing standards and technologies. The association, as one of its core objectives, will also regularly expose members to opportunities and developmental programmes in the field of Yoruba journalism.

“In addition, GYMP intends to protect the professional interest of members at all time. While also prioritising the welfare of members, organisation of symposia, workshops, and seminars shall also be critical tool through which the indigenous language media group will promote development in our society.” Akinrole who publishes Asejere newspaper said at the inaugural event.

In her remarks, secretary of GYMP, Olaide Gold, explained that, interested qualified media practitioners can obtain GYMP membership form, adding that individuals who are interested in becoming financial members will pay an annual subscription fee which can be confirmed from the secretariat.

She added that top on the agenda of the association is the professional growth of its members, declaring that members would benefit from international standard trainings and other developmental projects already put in place by the body.

The foundation members of the Guild of Yoruba Media Practitioners (GYMP) include professionals who use the Yoruba language in media practice, across print, broadcast and online media platforms all over Nigeria.
