Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has directed citizens of the state to take up arms and defend themselves against premeditated attacks by armed herdsmen who have been attacking them at will, making life unbearable for his people.
He therefore urged the State Commissioner of Police to process gun permit for as many citizens as possible who may come up requesting for gun permit in obedience to his directive to possess arms.
The order is coming as farmers prepare for the new farming season.
The governor said time has come for the people to take their security into their own hands and stop looking for government to rise to defend them, which in most cases do not help.
Zamfara, a Northwest state rich in mineral resources, especially Gold, have been under siege in the last five years from herdsmen and bandits who have made life unbearable for the people of the state.
Killings, kidnapping and cattle rustling have been on the rise in Zamfara State, forcing the Governor to challenge the people to rise up in self defence against these criminals.
