The National Association of Nigerian Students (NAN) has condemned the recent tuition fee increment by the Governing Council of the University of Maiduguri, calling for immediate reversal of the decision.
It said the increment was a surprise and affront of the ongoing war against insurgency in the northeast.
It lamented that the action of the university could make many students to drop out and could add to the army of restive youth in the country.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Maiduguri, Comrade Suleiman Muhammad Sarki, NANS Coordinator Zone C, called on students to hold on with registration pending the reversal of the decision by the concerned authorities.
He said: “Our calling for this decrement is not for the Governing Council of the University of Maiduguri to make it the way it is in 2018/2019 session , but to make it below that of 2018/ 2019 academic session , because most students in the University are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
“We are hereby seeking support from the entire Nigerian people and world to help us talk to the Federal government of Nigeria to call the attention of the University of Maiduguri Governing Council to our demand.
“We have no doubt this singular act by the University of Maiduguri will produce frustrated school dropouts and more illiterates on the streets, which may lead to unwanted security challenges.
“We choose this way of calling your attention through this world press conference, than that of protest, because some bad elements may hijack the process.”
