As trained and experienced journalists, coming up with story ideas should not be hard.
With so many events unfolding daily and numerous important issues that need to be reported, we should be spoiled for options. Yet, there are moments when blank out.
Like writers who face writer’s block, journalists too can experience times when ideas don’t flow as easily as they once did. Even when we manage to propose a few ideas during editorial meetings, they may be dismissed as weak, overreported, or not likely to make any impact as I used to do when I was Sunday Editor of The Nation Newspaper.
In such times, let us remember the encouragement from James 1:5 : “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Story ideas are not just products of training or years of reporting, they are expressions of divine wisdom and insight.
Instead of relying solely on our professional skills and knowledge, we must learn to lean on God for inspiration.
Ask the Lord to remind you of the stories you’ve read, worth telling and capable of transforming lives.
Pray that He will open your eyes to see the hidden angles, the untold narratives, and the impactful issues waiting to be uncovered. God, the Author of all creation, is able to reveal stories that no search engine or algorithm can provide.
Proverbs 4:7 reminds us that “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding”
With godly wisdom, you will have the understanding needed to meet your editor’s expectations, suggest meaningful stories to your team, and fulfill your calling as a journalist with purpose and clarity.
For you to enjoy the wisdom, you have to make Him the ‘Lord’ of your life. You must yield your life completely to God in obedience to His words and commune with Him in ‘ceasely prayers’.
Surely He will direct your thoughts, writings, speechs, steps and more aright.
