Fourteen buildings on Dosunmu Street on Lagos Island of Lagos State were completely razed by fire, the state’s emergency response agency, LASEMA said on Tuesday.
The fire razed two three-storey, one two-storey building and a structure in the area. The fire incident came barely three weeks after a similar incident had occured in the area. Many of the streets in the area, including the Jankara Market. Docemo Street in Dosunmu took the worst hit in the disaster.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said the Agency responded on time to the distress call and was at the scene of the incident. Upon arrival, he said, it was discovered that multiple buildings-two-storey building, a structure beside it, and two three-storey buildings behind were engulfed by fire.
He said initial investigation revealed that the immediate cause of the fire was from a shop where machine oil was being sold. He said a electricity generator was being refueled when it sparked and caught fire.
“Unfortunately, the generator that caught fire was thrown into other side of the road causing fire on a large scale. He added that two of the buildings have collapsed following the intensity of the fire.
“Three casualties are receiving treatment from agency paramedics. The emergency responders still fighting the fire so as to stop it from spreading to other buildings.
“The Shark team, LRU paramedics, Lagos state fire and rescue service, LASAMBUS officials, LNSC officials, CBD crew and Nigeria police force are joint responders presently bringing the situation at the site of the incident to normalcy,” he said.
The fire incident according to the Director of Lagos State Fire Service Mrs Adeseye was brought under some control around 8.30pm. She confirmed that no less than 14 buildings were involved in the fire incident.
