President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday unveiled relief materials delivered by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for distribution to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by disasters.

The unveiling of the relief materials was part of activities for the 2022 World Humanitarian Day.

The President was conducted by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq and Director General of NEMA Mustapha Habib Ahmed to the stand where the assorted relief materials comprising of food and non-food items were stacked within the venue of the celebration.

The President who was apparently happy with NEMA, pointed at some of the items in the bags and asked about the contents. He also took some time to view the multiple pictures on banners used to welcome him and highlighting NEMA’s activities.

The Governor of Borno State Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, Senator Mohammed Ndumi, Shehu of Borno and several other guests accompanied the President to the unveiling.

Earlier, inside the Banquet Hall, there was special recognition for outstanding staff of humanitarian agencies. For NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, the Head of Lagos Territorial Office was specially recognised as Exemplary Humanitarian Worker for the year.

August 19th of every year is World Humanitarian Day. The United Nations appointed this day over many years ago after a deadly incident that occurred in Iraq to commemorate the selfless services and dangers faced by Humanitarian workers.

Though this year’s major activities for commemoration of the WHD were held in Borno State on 18th August, Nigeria remains committed to the global date of 19th August.
