Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern about the state of democracy in Nigeria, warning that the country’s democratic system is facing serious challenges.
Obasanjo raised the concern while speaking about the political situation in the country, saying Nigerians should be worried about the direction in which democracy is heading.
The former President said citizens must not remain silent when democratic institutions and values are weakened.
“I’m worried about democracy. We’re caged,” Obasanjo said, expressing concern over what he described as restrictions affecting the country’s democratic space.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to protect democratic values and ensure that institutions responsible for safeguarding democracy are allowed to function effectively.
Obasanjo has repeatedly called for stronger democratic institutions, credible elections and greater accountability in governance.
His latest remarks come amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections and concerns over the future of opposition politics and democratic participation in Nigeria.
